Why can’t a regular panel beater repair my electric car?

If your electric or hybrid vehicle needs smash repairs, it’s important to use qualified electric vehicle panel beaters. It’s not just the engine that differs between EVs, hybrids and ICE vehicles; the architecture of the car and the materials used are also entirely different. Trained technicians can account for these differences and provide appropriate solutions.

For example, a lithium-ion electric motor can weigh nearly 200 kg more than a combustion engine. Electric vehicle manufacturers build car bodies from extremely lightweight materials, like carbon fibre and aluminium or composite metals, to offset that weight and maximise battery efficiency. These light metals often cannot be repaired the same way as the heavier metals used on an ICE vehicle.

No matter what you need taken care of, whether it’s a small paint scratch or a smash-induced air conditioning service, it’s best to choose an EV repairs expert. Sheen’s electric car panel beaters have the experience to offer accurate diagnoses and cost-effective repairs. We also offer a lifetime guarantee on all work.

frequently asked
questions

How long is your electric vehicle smash repairs process?
A simple plus symbol in blue

The length of the EV and hybrid car repairs process depends on the extent of the damage the vehicle has sustained.

Sheen can repair scrapes, scratches and moderate panel dents within a matter of days. But more extensive damage — especially damage to internal components — may require us to order replacement parts. At that point, we are bound by the delivery timeline. Bear in mind that we insist on only using genuine parts from the vehicle’s original manufacturer to preserve the safety and integrity of the car.

Contact us with details of your electric car’s state, and we will give you a reasonable time estimate for our smash repairs service.

Can Sheen offer me a replacement electric vehicle?
A simple plus symbol in blue

We do offer a number of accident replacement vehicles. You may request a model that suits your needs and preferences.

Unfortunately, however, we do not offer replacement electric or hybrid cars.

Does Sheen’s EV panel beating service offer a guarantee?
A simple plus symbol in blue

Here at Sheen, we have absolute confidence in our EV panel beaters’ abilities. That’s why we gladly offer a lifetime guarantee on all of our hybrid and fully electric vehicle smash repairs. Our guarantee will remain valid until your vehicle changes ownership.

Do I need an EV specialist for superficial paint scrapes?
A simple plus symbol in blue

We strongly recommend you always see an electric car smash repair specialist, no matter how minor the damage.

Scraped paint on an electric car may only need simple, straightforward repainting. But car paint dries under high heat. Exposing the battery to high temperatures for extended periods decreases its lifespan.

Fixing even the slightest damage with the wrong solution can have lasting consequences. However, our in-depth understanding of electric cars allows us to do every job correctly, affordably and on time.

Are electric engines quicker to repair than combustion engines?
A simple plus symbol in blue

Not necessarily. You may already know that electric motors require fewer mechanical components. Repairing a damaged electric motor is entirely different from repairing a combustion engine.

Electric motors deliver direct drive, meaning that the battery pack's energy passes directly into the wheels. In contrast, ICE cars need a gearbox and clutch to direct that power. That’s not all, of course. Many of the components necessary in an ICE car are entirely absent from an EV, such as spark plugs and drive belts, and there aren’t any gears greased in engine oil to tinker with.

This reduced complexity can make servicing an electric car cheaper and quicker. But if these simple components are damaged in an accident, they cannot be so easily stripped into their mechanical components and replaced as necessary.

Specialised EV mechanics are required to repair, restore or replace the unique components found within electric vehicles. The more experienced your repairer is, the lower you can keep your costs.
